Try these perfect sautéed shishito peppers for a side or appetizer, and they are sure to be your new favorite veggie!
These sautéed shishito peppers are the perfect addition to our homestead meals all summer long, and even in the winter thanks to the one store I have found to carry them! Thank you Trader Joe’s!!
We stumbled upon the shishito pepper by accident years ago! My mother-in-law found a seed packet of these peppers at a farmers market in Florida. She brought them back to our homestead in MO to grow. We quickly fell in love!
Now they are a must have! They are always grown in our home garden every year. Our family loves to grab them straight from the skillet after cooking to eat. They really are the perfect treat!
Tips for the best tasting shishitos:
- Use a cast iron skillet such as this one.
- Try olive oil to sauté.
- Grow your own! You can buy seeds here.
- Use pink Himalayan salt to season.
- Hold the shishito by the stem and eat the whole pepper.
Gather your tools and ingredients.

How to make perfect sautéed shishito peppers:
Step 1:
Place enough olive oil in your skillet just to cover the bottom of the skillet. Turn on the stove burner to medium-high.
Step 2:
Add your washed shishito peppers to the skillet. Be sure to dry them gently with a towel to eliminate as much water from being in the skillet as possible.
Step 3:
Continue to cook and stir the shishito peppers. They will begin to blister. Turn down the heat at this point to medium.
Step 4:
Let the peppers continue cooking while occasionally stirring until they are slightly blackened. Remove from heat, and sprinkle with salt. Serve as an appetizer or side to any meal. Enjoy!
